The Right Question

I got questions.

I wanna know what moves to make and what’s gonna help my career, make money, save money, build an audience, make my wife and kiddos happy, and I wanna know what’s for dinner.

I love questions. So it’s fitting that, as a designer, a creative person, I’ve become the answer guy. One reason for all the questions is that creativity is not math, there is no one answer. And that leaves much of what we do feeling like magic and mystery and like it comes down to a “Gosh, I hope they like it…” mentality.

In a survey of your questions, I’ve found a common denominator: people ask the wrong question.

They ask things like, “How can I make my boss/team happy?” or “How do I find my voice?” But questions like these lead them down the wrong path. They are searching…but outside of themselves. We should be asking how we can make ourselves happy and what we have to contribute.

Without the proper question, we can't solve the problem; the right question can propel us forward.

So what makes a question “right?”

It’s about the perspective and the attitude from which it stems.

The right questions are powerful. They feel different. They uncover our deepest truths and bring clarity to our thinking. They get to the root of a problem to find the answer that we already know—but are too afraid to face.

They lead to the hard truth, not the easy one—the one that sets you free.
